Disco Scram
Multiplayer Dance Game
The Product
Disco Scram is a multi-functional game involving a central disco and individual wristbands meant for ages 6 and up. It consists of both dancing and a collection of different mini-games. The toy is has all the music/audio programmed in so all that is needed is some open space and lots of energy.
The Rules
Players choose a color, wear a matching wristband, and press the corresponding button to join the game. Once up to 8 players are ready, they start the game by pressing the top button, activating music from the "Disco" in the center. Players wait for the first mini-game announcement while dancing. They will be informed of the next mini-game, but the start time is unknown. Mini-games include Catch that Color, where players tag the announced color, and Boogie Battle, a dance-off judged by others. The favorite mini-game is Conga Craze, where players form a conga line behind an announced color, with the last player not earning a point. After each mini-game, players press their button to record points, and the first to 5 points wins.
From Idea to Toy
During the semester, my teammates and I generated many ideas and focused on developing a product. We narrowed our choices to three main products, created pitches and basic prototypes, and gathered feedback to decide which toy to develop. We chose to create Disco Scram. We designed its functionality, appearance, and interaction. The outer part was made from thermoformed ABS plastic with an acrylic platform. We 3D printed a frame for the dome that allowed panels to snap into place. The panels were laser-cut acrylic for better light diffusion. Inside, we installed over 700 LEDs, along with buttons and a speaker, all connected to an Arduino and programmed to work together. This led to the creation of Disco Scram, which we presented to hundreds of students, faculty, and industry professionals.
